ROMA SUB ROSA: THE SECRET UNDER THE ROSE
STORYLINE
The Senate desperate to put an end to the chaos that Hannibal is causing on the Roman Peninsula, has sent out a rag tag army of new recruits and the shattered remnants of the disaster of Cannae. The newly formed Meridian armies are to engage Hannibal at all costs. The battle hardened Veterans of Cannae, led by Lt. General Cornelius Scipio, begin to assassinate the politicians who glorify the causes of war, and slowly through negotiation, barter, blackmail and murder seize control of the Meridian Army for themselves. The allegiances of these great families will put an end to the squabbling politicians and forge an empire the world will not soon forget. -Written by Jim Thalman SYNOPSIS The Secret Under the Rose (AKA: Roma Sub Rosa: The Secret Under the Rose) is a 2006 film set during the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage from 218 to 202 BC. The film capitalizes on themes of conspiracy and assassination. REVIEW This film, is so slick, so criminally intelligent. It's the first time I've seen Roman soldiers portrayed as men, with all the fear & conflicted, nuanced, detailed emotions of men who are about to over throw the government. It brings to light the birth of Mafia. How a generation of Field Officers whom are loyal to each other and not the glory of Rome swear an allegiance that will make them either Enemies of the State or the most powerful men the world has ever seen. The depth and emotional range of these characters is nothing shy of superb and instead of men touting the glories of war and the virtues of honor, they are a vicious lot of criminals that you root for every step of the way, men whom you would not want to cross, but definitely would want on your side in the worst of battles, these are men that I believed could forge an Empire, the old way, the ways of Mafia.
